First Impressions. Are They Important? Only If You Want The Job!

First Impressions

We all want to create a great first impression, everyone does.

An interviewer or employer can weigh you up in no time by use of their experience in reading body language.

Just like when you are introduced to new people, generally speaking you know within a few minutes of meeting a person whether you will like them or not and this is without knowing anything about them.

Call it ESP or whatever you want on a personal level, trained professionals can pick this up and begin to analyse you almost immediately.

So your first few moments are critical when you walk into that interview room or are greeted by your prospective employer.

We all vibrate various signals and these can be influenced by the way you make eye contact, how we dress, how we smell, our physical appearance, tone of voice, tapping a pen and yawning, right through to your body language.

All of these can prove to be difference in passing or failing your job interview.

However you can use this initial first contact to make a favourable impression to your potential employer. There is no need to worry about these introductory stages because they are designed to make you feel comfortable and relaxed before the interview.

If you are offered the hand of an interviewer a firm handshake and a warm, friendly smile whilst maintaining eye contact is always a good start.

Again, dressing smartly and sharply shows you have made a deliberate effort to impress. Keep in mind that too much aftershave, cologne or perfume can be off putting to the panel, particularly if one of the interview panel dislike it.

On a more personal note and as I described earlier neat and tidy hair is important and having it cut will ensure you don’t look shoddy or lazy in preparing for interview.
