How to Deliver a Great Interview Presentation

Interview Presentation

As a selection method, presentations involve having the applicants deliver a presentation either pre-prepared or ‘blind’.

By asking applicants to prepare and deliver their presentation, and in some cases to guide/lead discussions afterwards, panel members can see the applicant’s skills of written and oral presentation, analysis and rational thinking, evidence of their professional/academic knowledge and attitudes.

Interview presentations can also be used to assess an applicant’s degree of understanding of a designated subject matter as well as the ability to provide information pitched at a level that is appropriate for the interview panel.

Practice using an overhead projector, flip chart or other visual aids at home. Practice in front of your mother, father, brother, sister, friend, spouse, anybody and ask them how your presentation comes across.

An overhead projector slide with too much information on it can be unhelpful and distracting for the panel, particularly if they cannot read it.

Do not use a script. Use bullet points for your main topics and expand your dialogue with small index cards with written notes on them to remind yourself of what you plan to say.

Plan your presentation in a systematic and structured format.

Presentations are time bound so ensure you do not go over your time, as you will lose valuable marks.

Your guidelines for making a good presentation.

1. Practice in advance with a small number of people i.e. mother, father, spouse etc.

2. Know your structure and the subject matter of your presentation.

3. Write your notes in a format that is easy to handle physically i.e. index cards

4. Know your way around the overhead projector/laptop or any other equipment you might use.

5. If there is a time limit, keep within it or you will lose marks.

6. Scan the interview panel while delivering your presentation. Do not look down at your notes.

7. Speak clearly and try to slow down. Do not rush your presentation finishing too early may also lose you marks.

8. Be conscious of tone of voice and body language - gesticulating, eye contact, body movement etc.
