The following section is a further selection of common and quite tough questions you may be asked at interview. Again these are general type questions that you will often find asked at job interviews. I have provided you with a brief explanation and guide to answering these types of questions to help you along. Job Interview Question 1. What achievement are you most proud of? Think of areas inside or outside of work that you have achieved using skills you can convey to workplace events. Can you remember a time where you worked under pressure to meet a specific deadline or achieved a set goal or target? Have you managed a budget? If yes did you keep within your budget or did you make cost savings? Showcase your skills, knowledge and experience you have at this time, you won’t get another chance. Job Interview Question 2. In what circumstances would you ever violate the rules or breach Policy? Your responsibility is to prove you are flexible, not a danger to the organization. It is well worth remembering that there is a variation between breaking a rule to benefit your organization and breaking rules repeatedly because you find them restrictive. A positive answer to such a question might be that you may break a rule as a one off to an issue requiring an immediate decision where the organization may face adverse publicity or where the Health and Safety of an employee or visitor was at risk. Conclude your answer by informing the panel that you would go directly to your line manager or someone higher in the organization to provide a rationale for making the decision. Job Interview Question 3. The illegal question: Do you have/want kids/are you planning to have any? In Great Britain, Under European legislation, interviewers can only ask questions that are directly associated to the advertised post. I’m sure there is similar legislation in the US also. Questions around your personal situation that have no bearing on your ability to carry out the functions of the job are illegal. If an employer does ask, they are most likely to be ill informed regarding the law or they do know the law and are playing a very dangerous game. Your first reaction to this type of question would normally be to accuse the interviewer of discrimination. However you might want to ask the interviewer how the question has a bearing on the post, and depending on the answer you receive you can clarify how this is not a problem and will by no means, affect your performance in any way. It is not an often-asked question however it is not always a good idea to be critical about any of your previous employers. I suggest they will be testing your loyalty and professionalism because at some time in the future they could be your potential new employer. I would suggest your answer goes something along the lines of “I am fond of my boss; he is good at his job and is professional in the way he carries out his role. He is very experienced and he is a good leader’. Don’t go overboard, keep it brief, pleasant and professional. Job Interview Question 6. What Qualities Do You Think You Can Bring To This Post? Be honest about this because if you lie about playing a certain sport it is certain that one of the interview panel will be an expert in it.
