All your hard work has finally paid off — you’ve been called for a face-to-face job interview. Well done! The better prepared you are beforehand, the better your chances are of walking out of the interview with a confident smile on your face that says, “Yes! I think I got the job!” But now is not the time to rest on your laurels and think about how you’re going to spend your new salary; you’ve still lots of work to do. Keep in mind that this is a competitive business environment and there are certain to be many highly qualified applicants after your job. However, you are the one who is going to stand out. You are the one person who will excel at interview. And now is the time to prepare exactly how you will promote yourself to a prospective employer to achieve the competitive edge over others. Research the organisation well beforehand so that you can communicate that knowledge at the interview. Not only will this boost your credibility with the interviewer it will help you to formulate intelligent questions to ask them. I expect people to know about my organisation and I know from personal experience how people fail at this first stage. Failing to know anything about the company at this juncture is frowned upon by interviewers and could potentially get you off to a very bad start. If I ask the candidate what they know about my organisation and how they prepared for the interview I will have expected them to have researched the company and scrutinised the job description to determine where they and the job fits into the structure. Many candidates fail to employ this and its one of the major job interview techniques. So the best place to start is by researching the company as much possible. Contact the organisations communications or marketing department and ask them to send you a copy of their annual report or the company vision document. In here you will find the company philosophy and the type of services and customers they deal with. Use this information to find useful nuggets of information that you can drop into conversation at your interview. One of the easiest job interview techniques is to research an organisation is to look up the their website which will contain pages of background information, history and up-to-date news. Please believe me the more you know before your interview, the more confident you will feel and appear. Find out where the interview is to be held and visit it. Do this beforehand in order that you can gauge the length of your journey and any possible bottlenecks on the way. Have a contact number for the Human Resources Department (you will find this on your invitation to interview letter) in the off chance that you might get lost. Know where to park or where the nearest bus route and drop off points are located. Preparing this aspect of the job interview process will considerably reduce the levels of stress you experience.
