Job interviews - Competency Based/Behavioral Interviews

Behavioral/Competency Based Job Interviews

These type of interviews are now becoming more common. In some ways these are more straightforward if you have had experience in a particular field or have had a wide range of experience.

However they are not so easy for those of you who have limited or no experience. That should not put you off.

The key to this is preparation. You must be prepared to answer questions and give examples of where you have used your talents, skills and abilities in a number of particular circumstances.

These are not your standard traditional interview where a set question and specific response is required. In these scenarios the panel or interviewer wants to know how you performed in a particular in certain situations, what you learned from the experience and what you could have done better etc.

Remember I said you should not be put off? To answer these type of questions you do not have to relate your answers to previous employment or work experiences to deliver a great answer.

Use the talents and abilities you have acquired through your experience in college, university and any voluntary work you have done. Also include experiences of working in teams such as sports and recreational activities that show how you use your unique skills and how these can be transferred to the workplace.

This isn’t a one way street either. The panel will ask if you want to ask any questions. Use this time to evaluate if this company fits into your career plan if they are right for you. Use the list of questions to ask in the questions and answer section of this site for more help.

Additionally I suggest you consider

The Complete Job Interview Success E-book which has a comprehensive section on competency based and behavioral situations. It also has the answers to 120+ questions in a format that you can adapt to any question posed to you by the interviewer.
