This is all good work and should put you at ease and in a better and more confident position than most other candidates. Remember an interview is perceived to be a concentrated period of questioning from up to three people or more, which is to enable an organization to make judgments as to your suitability for the post. Whilst this may be accurate, the interview is also an opportunity for you to make similar judgments about their organization. However it worth remembering that you are in the position to determine if this company is right for you. Once you adopt this mindset, you will feel more in control and self-confident before you enter the interview room. Interviews are a two-way process and the interview panel will take into consideration that you may be nervous from the outset. However, and as I discussed earlier, the panel already see you in a positive light and want you to do well. These job interview tips will certainly help you Job Interview Tip: How Can I Control My Nerves? To begin with there is nothing to worry about. We often get worked up about the slightest and most meaningless things. Worry and fear are only states of mind and we have the power to change the way we think in any given moment. Yes you really do have the power to choose. Fear is False Emotion Appearing Real (FEAR). I can guarantee that you will have been in circumstances in the past where you have been in a state of major nervous tension and once the situation is over you have said ‘what was I worrying about? The answer? Nothing is ever as bad as it seems. Job Interview Tip: So how can you combat this fear? When the energy associated with fear comes up, ask yourself, "What am I really afraid of?" Perhaps it is embarrassment, or getting caught out in some silly way. Or maybe it comes down to someone finding out about our perceived limitations at the interview stage. Fear itself is not real, but the energy it represents leads us to believe that it is real andthis energy is to be avoided. However, upon deeper examination of this negative energy we discover what we're really trying to avoid are aspects of ourselves being changed. These aspects are the perception of who we think we are. The belief that some part of us is being threatened and is in danger of being lost leads to an unconscious reaction to hold on, even if this change is something we consciously want. We believe that we must remove the threat to feel safe. Fear feeds on our memories of the past and projections of the future. Fear exists because we identify with the body and is why we get shaky hands, dry mouth and butterflies in the stomach. In this moment right now, yes right now, what do you have to fear? That’s right - Absolutely nothing. Fear is an illusion created by a thought of something we don't want to happen. It is the reason we feel nervous. These are the ‘what ifs’. For example ‘what if I make a complete fool of myself’, ‘what if I don’t know what to say’ ‘what if I let myself down’. To learn about dealing with fear, we must be willing to step inside of it and experience what it is without trying to change it. The more we are exposed to it, the more opportunities we have to get familiar with it. In the end, it is just energy, there for us to explore and experience. This is why we should learn to use these ‘nerves’ to our advantage. If we stop trying to figure it out and just watch -- we can then take the opportunity to accept and learn from it. For me, this has taken a lot personal training and discipline to master, however dealing with it this way has allowed me to achieve much more than I ever imagined. In terms of interview technique, try to relax and be the watcher of your feelings and thoughts and you will see them for what they are – for keeping us safe. Job Interview Tip: What should I drink? Stick to water. Fizzy drinks beforehand normally a job interview have a tendency to creep up on you and can be embarrassing if you are in the flow of a response i.e. what I call ‘the burpees’. Often the interview panel will provide a glass of water for you. It’s really up to you to decide if you wish to avail of it. Taking the time to take water in the interview buys you a little time, but not much, just enough to gather your thoughts before you answer a question. It’s cool and fresh and often can re-focus your mind back to the question and also if you have a dry mouth and tongue! Alternatively use a relaxing product such as Rescue Remedy spray or pastille to relax you a little more. Follow the instructions. Just a couple of sprays on the tongue worked wonders for me. Job Interview Tip: What do I do about shaky hands and bouncing on my toes when sitting? Everyone that I know of who has been involved with job interviews has developed shaky hands, even some interviewers! The bouncing on your toes is just your adrenaline kicking in, but in most cases this tension will appear outside of the interview room while you are sitting waiting. However if you feel this when you are in the room try and bring your chair towards the interview panel desk to ensure they remain hidden. You don’t want the panel to think your legs are on an invisible trampoline! I’m not sure if there is any best way to control either, however you will most likely notice this at the beginning of the interview. What I have noticed in my experience is that the shaking will naturally drift away as you gain more confidence as you progress through the interview. But holding your hands together and keeping your feet firmly on the ground initially will inevitably help you. You will find as your confidence grows you will begin to gesture with your hands as you are providing the interviewer with your answers and your whole body will relax as you progress. Job Interview Tip: What if there are complex or tough questions? See what’s happening here? What ifs are starting to raise their heads! Don’t worry, because you are not on your own. Unless you have a mole inside the company or you have bribed one of the job interview panel you wont know what is going to be asked. As mentioned briefly earlier you will have done all your research, you will have studied the job description and you will have selected a number of questions and answers from the Q&A section of this book and revised them to suit the type of question you may be asked. Preparation is the key and you are sitting very nicely armed with all the tools you need to answer any question that is thrown at you. Taken from an excerpt of
